Statements of Candidates:

Chairman:

Gavin Wolstenholme:

My name is Gavin Wolstenholme, I am 26 years old and a married father of 3. I have been studying law with the OU since 2007. I intend to complete my law degree and seek a career in the legal profession.

I am already very involved with the OU outside of my studies. I have just been elected as Chairman for the Wigan Branch of OUSA, obviously I am a member of OULS and through my studies I am a member of the Future Lawyers Association.

It would be an honour to serve as Chair for OULS and hope the work it does can continue and grow to help current and future law students of the OU.

Treasurer:

Mervyn Bright:

I am new to the OU law course which I am pursuing from a general interest point of view and not in anticipation of a career in the law. I retired prematurely in March 2000 since when I have been pursuing various academic studies - gaining an MSc and an MEd to add to my existing BA(Hons). My working life was spent as a practicing Chartered Accountant from 1958 (and I still deal wih four clients!) as well as lecturing on accountancy and taxation in the Bournemouth and Poole College, Southampton College of Technology and Portsmouth Polytechnic (now university). From 1983 onwards I was visiting lecturer in dental practice management at all the UK dental schools except Sheffield and Dublin having co-authored a book on that topic and writing reguarly for the Dentist Journal.

I acknowledge (and fully support) the idea that students may find holding a committee post in OULS as valuable addition to their CV when seeking employment and I would certainly not wish to deter anyone keen to aspire to a committee post.

Having said that, if you are in difficulties in finding a treasurer, I would be quite happy to put myself forward as a candidate.

My unfortunate experience in practice has been that solicitors (and barristers) whilst competent lawyers are rather less at home with finance!!! (only dentists are worse but they won' admit it)

Review Associate Editors:

Craig Matthew Harris:

I am currently in the final year of my law degree with the Open University. I am a student member of Lincoln’s Inn, and am hoping to commence the BVC in September 2009. I currently work for Clarks International [The shoe retailers], working as a Warehouse Control Systems Operative within Clarks’ only distribution centre. I am also the Trade Union representative for the management and clerical sections of the company, serving an approximate 250 members. Prior to commencing employment with Clarks (and perhaps more pertinently, prior to OU study), I have been educated to A-level standard, holding 8 A-levels, and a Higher Certificate in Paralegal Studies. I am 24, live in the village of Street, in Somerset, and do little except for work and study!

I have also previously completed part-time work as a proof-reader for a local publishing firm, so working to deadlines with a good grasp of English is not a new skill to be learned!

Gareth A.H. Edwards:

I am in the third year of study with the OU, currently a W201 student, having completed the W100, W200 courses and I am finalising W221 at the present time. Thus I have a number of years to completion of my degree, and feel I can add something to the production of the review.

As a shift worker, I do have quite an amount of free time (jokingly – the courses tend to eat into most of that!) and would be able to meet a number of hours commitment for the OULS.

Martin Green

I am currently studying W200 as part of the LLB degree, with the aim of eventually qualifying as a solicitor. I am interested in taking up an Associate Editor post within OULS.

Away from studying, the main focus of my job is to write and edit articles for the quarterly newsletter that I produce for families of disabled children. I would like to combine this experience with my study of the law in order to produce legal articles for the OULS Law Review, turning my hand to the challenge of a new audience. I have enjoyed reading the Law Review since joining OULS over a year ago, and feel that it is of great value to OU law students. I would therefore very much like the opportunity to contribute to future issues for the benefit and interest of fellow students.

Events Team:

Stewart Fraser :

My name is Stewart Fraser and I am currently studying W301 and DD100 after completing in the last 3 years W100(pass), W200(distinction), W201(distinction) and W300(distinction). Additionally, I am a student member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple and intend to make an application to the University of West of England in September to take the BVC.

Over the last three years I have also taken part in various periods of work experience, including a mini-pupillage involving visits to numerous Crown Courts in and around London. During these periods of work experience one thing has become clear and this is undoubtedly the need for students, especially those intending to partake in any form of advocacy work, to receive as much court- room and indeed mooting experience as is possible.

I am a highly motivated individual, who runs his own business outside of my OU studies and I feel that this motivation and my desire to succeed would make me a worthy candidate for the events team of the OULS. If successful I will of course strive to perform any duties to the best of my ability.

I hope that you feel that I may be of some assistance to the OULS.

Nina Ware:

I would be interested in participating as part of the events team. I love organising things (which all my friends and family love as they don't have to do any of the hard work!). I'm 24 and currently in year 5 (W301) of the LLB slog! I think it is important for the OULS to put on events that would be beneficial to our studies and careers (whilst having fun too - no one likes a law-bore!), particularly as a lot of opportunities that may present themselves to full time students may sometimes pass us lot by. So, all in all I would like to be considered so I can help out.
