OULS Mooting Workshop 2006
Our first ever OULS Mooting Workshop was held on the 28th of January
2006 in Milton Keynes; the perfect beginning to the 2006 mooting year.
The workshop was designed to help students understand the basics
of mooting.
The Day
The day was laid out in three parts.
A brief introduction to OULS and OULS mooting was given by Ian Beeby,
Chairman of the OU Law Society.
Afterwards, a talk given
by Mr Leslie Cuthbert, OU law tutor and Solicitor Advocate about the
trials and tribulations of a law career and how mooting fits in with the
pursuit of a law degree.
Following this enlightening and informative
talk was OULS member and OU LLB graduate Richard Deery with a discussion
on mooting procedures and guidance.
In the second part of the day, workshop attendees were given the opportunity to
see the beginning of a moot.
OULS member Nicholas Everitt gave a very convincing
and well prepared argument and Leslie Cuthbert gave him an equally convincing
and grueling judging.
In the last part of the day, OULS members were given problems to work through
in mooting terms. We first looked at a mooting problem and talked it through in
terms of the legal points we would look for when preparing a legal argument.
Members then broke into groups where each took on the role of advocate.
They were taught how to formulate a rudamentary skeleton
argument, prioritise their arguments and were given the opportunity to stand up
and show the rest of the group a simple moot in front of a judge.

Attendees were given a mooting handbook and encouraged to sign-up for either
internal and/or external moots for the 2006 mooting year.
